Anjana Thirumalai’s concert pointed to an upcoming artiste, who showed promise, but it also equally showcased another rising talent with the bow — Pappu Gyandev. Early in the concert came the Malayamarutham piece, ‘Manasa Etulo,’ which was sung beautifully, though Anjana seemed to lose control of breath twice. Following the Varali, Anjana sang a Darbar (‘Munduvenuga’) and Vasantha (‘Seethamma Mayamma’) — the first in very slow pace and the second sprightly. Perhaps the effect would have been better if Anjana had flipped it, so that the Darbar was fast and the Vasantha, slow. They ate into the time that Anjana had for the main piece — Sankarabharanam.
