Andrew Coyne: Assumptions behind immigration rage don’t stand up to scrutiny


Even the journalist Scott Gilmore, no restrictionist himself, wonders in Maclean’s whether the proportion of recent immigrants in Canada’s population might be nearing the point at which it ignites a right-wing populist backlash. Immigration hysterics tend to get very shirty at the suggestion that there is anything xenophobic about their distaste for outsiders. Plainly we view immigrants as not possessing the same rights as ourselves — not even the right to join our midst. And yet it rests on some unexamined assumptions that don’t stand up well under scrutiny. The other, more basic assumption is that those born here have the automatic right to prevent others from joining them.
