But scientists from within and outside the institute have now asserted that the 1991 activity never stopped. The Barren Island volcano turned active in 1991 after being dormant for about 160 years. After its large lava flows in 1991, Ray said, the volcano had intermittently released lava in 1999, 2000, 2005 and 2009. The team also observed lava fountains spewing into the atmosphere and lava flows down the slopes. While surveying the Andaman basin, Mudholkar and his colleagues have identified several small, submerged volcanoes along what they call a "volcanic arc".
