But leaving aside those pressures, recent history does point to the Lord Advocate role changing hands shortly after the election on May 7. Mr Mulholland had served as the Solicitor General - the Lord Advocate's deputy - before succeeding Dame Elish Angiolini. Indeed, we need to go back to 2007 to find an election when the role of Lord Advocate has not changed hands. Looking back, if recent history is anything to go by, the chances of there being a new Lord Advocate sometime after May 7 do seem high. What, of course, is not known is who, should the post change hands after May 7, the new Lord Advocate may be.
