And then there was Martin Crowe’s 299, and, of course, the 1992 Cricket World Cup when New Zealand agonisingly lost in the semifinals. While I recovered, I read the History of World Cricket over and over again. I do, however, know how New Zealand performed in every test series up to 1990 because of this book. I love sport in general, but I never found myself invested in following any team like I am in the New Zealand men’s cricket team. Test cricket, with its ebbs and flows, narratives within narratives, history, and ability for an hour to define five days.
