A kite (the bird variety) circles high above the chimney tops, as a cock pheasant walks daintily across the gravel drive. The evening sun floods the honeyed front of the Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor house; a few guests are inspecting the walled kitchen gardens, a father pushes his daughter on the swing. It would have given us more time to revel in The Pig at Combe’s thrilling position on a hill, set in 3,500 acres of lush Devon countryside with stupendous views towards Cornwall.
