The fourth-most watched movie (behind those two and The Lorax) is How Do You Know, an infamous flop from a decade ago. The $120 million-budgeted Tri-Star release, written and directed by James L. Brooks, starred Reese Witherspoon as a softball player (unfairly?) Nobody showed up for the $120 million rom-com, with the film earning just $30 million domestic and $49 million worldwide and mostly being forgotten. Netflix’s rivals are dealing with many of their revenue streams (theme parks, theatrical movies, merchandise, live and televised sports, etc.) Netflix, to their credit, saw an opening (cheap, buzzy movies that could successfully approximate the genuine Hollywood article) and took it.
