An Iceberg The Size Of A Hawaiian Island Is About To Set Sail From Antarctica

The cracks are over 55 km (34 miles) and 60 km (37 miles) long, respectively. When the two meet, a 1,594 square-km chunk of the floating ice shelf could separate itself from the continent, creating an iceberg of a size that would fit in well in the Hawaiian Islands - it would be a little bigger than Kauai and a little smaller than Maui. But it's expected this will be the largest such event ever seen on the Brunt shelf. In a sense, it's overdue for a big calving event. After the Brunt calving event, scientists will be watching closely to see if the break causes the grounded ice behind it to begin flowing more quickly, which could be bad news for rising sea levels.
