An elephant of the Srirangam temple [near Trichinopoly] was brought last night [February 11] at about 7.30 to the Varaganeri Agraharam for the purpose of heading a marriage procession. The animal being at large went to the watershed near the clock tower where it smashed a cart and killed its driver. A number of posts and sheds were thrown away and the elephant committed damage wherever it could think of which after all, fortunately, was not very great. One Mahout was on the animal all the time and warned people of the danger of coming near it. Early in the morning when there was sufficient light the elephant was shot dead by the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
