More towns should follow suit in ditching their siren systems if they’re committed to keeping citizens aware of hazardous weather. Before weather radar and cell phones came about, tornado sirens were the most advanced method of warning the town about an approaching storm. Today, we have lots of proven and effective ways to instantly receive tornado warnings no matter where we are or what we’re doing. Tornado sirens are like glass fire grenades in a world where we’re surrounded by cheap and effective fire extinguishers. The single biggest strike against these aging systems is that tornado sirens are not designed to be heard indoors.
