Amtrak And Virginia Announce Agreement To Add Passenger Service And Reduce Congestion

The wide-ranging agreement, called “Transforming Rail in Virginia,” includes a commitment by Virginia to build a dual-track railway passenger bridge across the Potomac River to Washington, DC. The new bridge would be dedicated to passenger service, with the existing rail bridge used for freight rail. The existing bridge across the Potomac is used by both freight and passenger rail, and is the cause of systemic delays. That portion will be a passenger-only section of high-speed rail line, and will tie into the new Southeast high-speed rail network, where that state is planning high-speed rail to Charlotte, NC. The rail growth in Virginia is under the auspices of the newly-created Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, which was created in 2020.
