Five Amisom soldiers are among 15 people arrested in Somalia on Monday over the alleged sale of military hardware. Somalia’s head of police Mohamed Hamud told the press in Mogadishu the Amisom troops had been under surveillance following allegations they were involved in the illegal sale of powerful weapons. Independent reports, including two by the United Nations, have accused the force of engaging in illegal trade in charcoal, sugar and ammunition. Somalia’s Interior minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed said the sale of equipment may “explain why insecurity is increasing”. The UN said the proceeds of the illegal trade aid al Shabaab.
