Americans love lists and rankings, though many such compilations have no useful purpose. U.S. News & World Report has turned its lists of rankings—including America’s best colleges and hospitals—into a cottage industry. There are many other interesting lists of rankings as well. The American Institute for Economic Research, for example, lists the cities it considers the “best job destinations” for young college grads. Just three years later, many of these weird, promising new jobs are no longer weird; they’re commonplace.
