Since Trump first came down the escalator seven years ago next week, the question of truth has been of enormous importance in American politics. Truth, belief and knowledge all intermingle in a complicated way. The rioters were motivated by a belief that they thought was true, so, therefore, it’s the people who fostered that false belief who are culpable for what followed. Perhaps you could have convinced someone in December 2020 that Trump’s claims were false. But now there’s an entire cinematic universe of intertwining false claims that tie it all together, a Gordian knot immune to any swords.
