SEOUL—South Korea will deport a U.S. citizen who allegedly tried to enter North Korea across the heavily mined inter-Korean border on Monday, the same day a North Korean soldier defected to the South, according to a person familiar with the matter. The man, identified as Lawrence Bruce Byron, was arrested while attempting to cross to the North from the South Korean county of Yeoncheon, some 40 miles north of Seoul, the person said.
