In a letter to employees, American CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said the new cancellations represent 1.5% of its total flights each day of the busy summer travel season. American's fleet includes 24 Max jets and the airline had previously planned to cancel flights through early June. By extending cancellations through the summer now, airline officials said they can plan more reliably for the peak travel season. Both American and Southwest said their reservations and sales teams will work with customers to manage travel plans. Boeing is working on software updates to prevent the repeated triggering of a system that can drive the plane's nose down.
