KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat with a simple voice vote to increase penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and reckless driving. The passing of the Act means that stiffer punishments await those who cause death due to recklessness or driving under the influence. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the amendments to the Bill were done in a comprehensive manner to tackle the problem. Among the amendments to the Bill include those charged with causing death due to dangerous or reckless driving can face up to 10 years imprisonment and be fined up to RM50,000 if convicted. Meanwhile, the Bill also proposed that those who are charged with dangerous or reckless driving can also have their licenses disqualified for a period of five years from the current two years.
