Tinsukia, Jan. 22: Militants lobbed grenades and fired at an Assam Rifles foot patrol escorting tourists to a winter festival being organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government, killing two jawans and injuring several others near the Assam-Arunachal border this morning. The militants targeted the patrol on National Highway 38 in Jairampur in Assam's Tinsukia district around 8 this morning. Two vehicles carrying tourists to the Pangsau Pass Winter Festival in Arunachal were damaged but none of the visitors was injured. The deceased jawans have been identified as riflemen L. Ginlan Ven Nagaithe and Khampai Wangsu. A statement issued by Ulfa (I) this afternoon claimed the attack was carried out by a joint team of the outfit and the Coordination Committee of four Manipur-based groups - the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive), Revolutionary People's Front and the United National Liberation Front.
