For Europe’s wealthiest man, retailing kingpin Amancio Ortega, the dawn of springtime has brought good fortune. The octogenarian Spaniard has officially reclaimed his spot as the world’s third-richest person. Since then, his fortune has risen $3.7 billion—$1.2 billion in the last five days alone—sending him well past the Amazon founder, who is presently worth an estimated $72.8 billion. A year ago, Ortega ranked second in the world with a net worth of $67 billion. Then, in September 2016, his fortune spiked to almost $80 billion and he briefly surpassed Bill Gates as the world's wealthiest individual.
