Along the Hooghly, silence of the mills

Ten years since, as the constituency goes to the polls again, Mr. Devdas and other workers have little hope of the mill reopening. The CPI(M)-nominated Left Front candidate for the seat, Gargi Chatterjee, is a well-known trade union leader of the region. Discussing details of her campaign at the CPI(M) office in Naihati, she counted the number of jute mills in Barrackpore on her finger tips. Like Barrackpore the constituencies of Hooghly, Howrah and Sreerampore have jute mills all lined up along the banks of the Hooghly. There are about 60 big and small jute mills in the State, 39 of which suffered closure and lockouts in the past four years.
