Ally of Venezuelan Opposition Leader Is Detained, Guaidó Says

The vice president of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled National Assembly was arrested on Wednesday night, according to the opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has struggled for months to take control of the government from President Nicolás Maduro. “The regime has seized the first vice president,” Mr. Guaidó tweeted on Wednesday night, naming Edgar Zambrano, the vice president of the legislative body. “They intend to disintegrate the power that represents all Venezuelans, but they will not succeed.”Mr. Zambrano’s exact status was not immediately clear. He also tweeted on Wednesday, writing that at 6:35 p.m., after leaving his party’s headquarters, “we’re surrounded” by intelligence officers. “They used a tow truck to transfer us by force directly to the Helicoide,” he added, referring to a government building.
