Higher education in the UK is a global success story. Our universities are highly regarded worldwide, with rankings putting four of our universities in the world’s top 10, and they produce world-class research, making them attractive to international students and staff. But the UK’s impending exit from the EU has created significant uncertainty as the deep roots of this success - the links between our universities and those on the continent - are at risk. The education committee, which I chair, argues in our report published today that the next government, of whichever complexion it may be, must address as an urgent priority concerns surrounding staffing, immigration and research in order to avoid a damaging Brexit for our universities.
