Alligator weed, found in the Mangaone Stream, has the potential to drastically alter various waterways. Officials hope they eliminated a highly invasive weed found in Manawatū before it was potentially moved onto a large area of farmland which doubles as a flood spillway. Horizons Regional Council has been keeping an eye on the Mangaone Stream, which flows through Palmerston North, after discovering alligator weed there during the the 2020 coronavirus lockdown. The Mangaone Stream flows into the Manawatū River. Speaking at Horizons’ environment committee on Wednesday, pest plant team leader Craig Davey said they had not found alligator weed outside the Mangaone Stream.
