MIRI: Seventy-three years ago, Allied Forces' paratroopers landed in the Bario Highlands of northern Sarawak, marking the start of gruelling operation to liberate Sarawak from Japanese rule. Gen Stephen said the successful landing in Bario in the Semut 1 operations led to Allied Forces carrying out similar landings in other difficult jungle terrain. "After the Semut 1 Bario operations, Semut 2 was carried out in Baram in the interior of Miri division. During the celebrations Sunday, the local community also presented tokens of appreciation to families of the soldiers who were involved in the Bario landing. Local villagers and soldiers who helped the Allied Forces were also lauded and presented with awards.
