Allentown’s school board approves acting superintendent to remain in role

The Allentown School District’s board of education on Thursday night appointed Superintendent Carol D. Birks to remain in the role long-term. The board had hired Birks in October as acting superintendent, after releasing her predecessor, John D. Stanford, one year into his five-year contract in a departure that roiled the community. “I believe that Dr. Birks will provide the school district with much-needed stability in the Superintendent position,” school board President Audrey Mathison said in a statement Thursday night. I am humbled and deeply grateful for the trust of the School Board of Directors, and I am thrilled to be named the Superintendent of this amazing and culturally diverse community. She told the school board in October she left when the district outsourced its management to the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit.
