A team from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the Transport Ministry had already sent documents about the project to the Attorney General for clearance. An American firm, Becthel International Inc was awarded the contract to build the 473 kilometre highway days before the August 8th election. The awarding of the tender to Becthel International Inc sparked a war among agencies interested in the contract. The Jubilee government boasts of the Standard Gauge Railway, popularly known as the Madaraka Express, launched earlier this year.
