Dunedin Railways Ltd was put into hibernation earlier this year due to Covid-19's impact on tourism. Dunedin is bringing its rail stock out of hibernation – at least for a couple of months – to offer rail services over summer. Mayor Aaron Hawkins said the the Dunedin City Council would underwrite the limited season of rail services. Stuff-co-nz Passenger trains will return to the Dunedin Railway Station this summer. A small number of fixed-term seasonal staff would be employed to supplement the existing Dunedin Railways’ hibernation team.
