While our minds are numbed by the metaphorical hot air wafting through the room, the literal air is increasingly polluted by ever-higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) . And when those CO2 levels hit 1,000 or even 2,000 parts per million (ppm), our cognitive skills actually decline. What we find is that when organizations implement a Statement of Achievement in all their meetings, meetings end, on average, 17 minutes earlier. Before you invite someone, ask yourself whether the input they’re going to provide, or the resources they control, is worth the extra carbon dioxide they’re going to put into the air. I have a hunch that you’re going to find that quite a few people are not worth the literal or figurative hot air they’re going to blow.
