Boris Johnson needs to do something he hates doing. In fact it is not totally clear that he is capable of doing it, but his premiership might well depend on his efforts to try. He needs to be quiet. And he needs to hope that everyone else — Brussels, Dublin, Merkel, Macron, DUP and backbench waverers — bite their lips too. No news is good news: that the European Union and everyone else didn’t immediately tell him to bugger off is itself progress.
