Personal trainer Alison Storey's weekly column, Storey on Sport, answers your questions on fitness and wellbeing. Q: I've heard people talk a lot about functional fitness, what is it? A: Functional fitness has grown as a prescriptive exercise antidote to the increasingly sedentary environment of the last three decades. Training programmes that involve functional fitness aim to put the body through similar movement patterns as are encountered in everyday life, such as a squat and reach, or a floor to standing weighted exercise. Accordingly, it has revamped its daily fitness routines, using a combination of functional fitness and lifting.
