A student and teacher from Alisal High School have been announced as winners of a New York Times’ multimedia contest challenging entrants to describe what it is like to attend or teach high school today. The contest – run by the Times’ Learning Network – was titled “What High School is Like in 2023” and invited educators and students from around the world to depict high school in 2023 in any medium they liked. Alisal High School student Danna Ramirez and teacher Veronica Dorantes-Pulido were two of 25 selected winners. “What, we wondered, could our core audience of high school teachers and students add to those reports? Where is the nearest exit?”Pulido said the writing was an opportunity to share her lived experience as a modern school teacher.
