Ali Stroker's Tony Award Was Only Broadway's First Step To Disability Inclusivity, Long Road Ahead

Charles Sykes/Invision/AP"We need to make Broadway less white, less cis, and less male,” lighting designer Bradley King said in his Tony Award acceptance speech Sunday night. Despite King’s, as well as many of Sunday’s award winners’, emphasis on the need for Broadway to be more diverse and inclusive, they failed to mention disability. But what the audience missed is that due to Radio City’s structural inaccessibility, Stroker had to be seated backstage when her category was being announced. Since there was no ramp front stage, Stroker was told to wait backstage in case she won the award. Yes, Broadway needs to be “less white, less cis, and less male,” but, most importantly, it needs to be less ablest.
