On 5 February 2020, Sonatrach CEO Kamel Eddine Chikhi was dismissed from his position by a government decree. Chikhi was appointed in November 2019, and his dismissal signals continued instability within Algeria’s most important economic institution. The plant was purchased by the controversial former CEO of Sonatrach, Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour, before he was dismissed from his job. A few years ago, Ould Kaddour was rehabilitated and brought back to lead Sonatrach by another controversial figure, former energy minister, Chekib Khelil. The company needs stabilizing so as to focus on bringing more financial resources to a country that needs it badly.
