Algeria’s president Tebboune downplayed his failure to join the BRICS, which admitted other African and Asian countries as new members. Tebboune spoke with certainty two years ago promising his people to join the BRICS group, much to his disappointment when the grouping admitted Egypt and Ethiopia along with Iran the UAE and Saudi Arabic, but rejected Algeria. In a recent interview with sycophant media, Tebboune said that he “no longer thinks of joining BRICS,” expressing satisfaction with giving $1.5 billion to the BRICS’ New Development Bank. As a state that lacks an industrial base with an oil and gas-dependent economy, Algeria does not meet the requirements to join the group of industrialized nations. Moreover, Algeria’s voice is growing inaudible in its immediate African environment where it sowed tension with most of its neighbors notably Morocco, Mali, and Libya.
