Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas has become the first female player to retain the title of Best FIFA Women’s Player, having won the award for the second year in a row. The accolade recognises the most outstanding performers in the women’s game between August 7, 2021 and July 31, 2022, according to FIFA. Putellas, who plays for FC Barcelona Femeni, led her club to its third successive league title this year. She has also won two Ballons d’Or and two UEFA Player of the Year awards in 2021 and 2022. In addition, she has been named several times to the Spanish league team of the season.
