OTTAWA—Let’s take a journey to what Alexandre Trudeau calls “deep Canada.” It’s winter in the primordial woods. Alexandre Trudeau collaborated with Shirley Williams, an elder at Trent University who translated his script to Ojibwe and coached the actors, for his new short film Wiisgaapte (Bitter Smoke). That’s the premise of Trudeau’s latest film, Wiisgaapte, a short movie that airs on CBC at 12:30 a.m. Friday, and on the Gem streaming service as of 11 p.m. Thursday. Trudeau spoke to the Star this week about Wiisgaapte, the meaning of the Windigo legend, and his thoughts on reconciliation, identity and the importance of stories. I think reconciliation is more than just accepting what was done wrong in the past ... It’s not just looking back.
