Scotland legend Alex McLeish has called for dementia among footballers to be classified as a work-related injury. Lisbon Lion Billy McNeill and Scotland and Manchester United great Gordon McQueen are among ex-players who’ve passed away following a dementia diagnosis. “This would give players and their families access to the benefits and the support they need,“ said McLeish. The Labour MSP says the SNP government should use its powers to classify brain illnesses in former footballers as industrial injuries. A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit continues to be delivered by the UK Government who decide which conditions should be prescribed for the purposes of the benefit.
