I’ve been critical of the Trump administration’s approach to health care, mostly for odd timidity about pressing problems. President Trump’s new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, spoke to the Federation of American Hospitals yesterday and laid out a set of surprisingly bold policy principles. They are aligned with priorities long espoused by employer groups like mine: addressing the fundamental flaws in the economics of health care. Our health care system does not compete with other developed countries on quality, and consumes 18% of the US GDP. Burdensome regulations have impeded common sense in health care, as employers know.
