And on occasion, as a special treat, we would go to the French bookstore there, Librairie de France. courtesy LDFIt was there I was given presents of my much cherished Tintin comic books (and they were hardbacked books!) There are new releases, new translations (of English books into French and French into English), classics, poetry and, yes, comic books. From what I can see at Albertine, French literature is doing just fine – even booming with new voices from the suburbs of Paris, as well as from Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. I was cosseted in a world of French books and French literature – it was an oasis as precious as it was mind-expanding.
