EDMONTON — The Alberta government is trying to fill the job of advocate for people with disabilities, but the scope of the job worries members of the community who say it isn’t independent enough. But Bruce Uditsky, CEO of Inclusion Alberta, a non-profit that campaigns on behalf of people with developmental disabilities, said he is concerned that the advocate won’t be reporting to the legislature, but to the minister directly. When consultations first began between organizations like Uditsky’s and the provincial government, he said it was made clear that an independent advocate was what they wanted. Ministers and parties in power change, meaning the advocate may not be able to remain consistent in their endeavours, he said. “An independent advocate would allow some consistency, I think, with respect to what the community wants,” he said.
