EDMONTON — The federal carbon tax comes into effect in Alberta on Wednesday, but the provincial government insists it’s nowhere near done fighting against the Liberal attempt to cut down emissions, saying Albertans voted against the tax in the election last spring. On Tuesday, Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer told the National Post that the government is doing “everything in our power” to fight in court against the carbon tax. The federal Liberals vowed to impose a federal tax on provinces that don’t develop their own, and have already done so in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswick. The carbon tax comes into effect against the backdrop of a handful of court cases: Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario have been disputing the federal government’s legal authority to impose a carbon tax on recalcitrant provinces. Alberta’s case was heard last month, but the Alberta Court of Appeal has yet to make a decision.
