Monday’s afternoon sitting of the legislature was temporarily adjourned after a body was found on the building’s front steps. Police had cordoned off the plaza in front of the legislature with yellow tape and were directing visitors to use the west entrance. Both Kenney and Notley encouraged those in need of mental health support to seek help through the Alberta Mental Health Helpline. Information provided by the legislature library shows that on Oct. 27, 1977, a man named Guenter Hummel entered the legislature building with a gun hidden in a garment bag and proceeded to then-culture minister Horst Schmid’s office. If you or someone you know need help, please call Alberta’s Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642, HealthLink at 811, or 911 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
