Alabama House passes bill that would make abortion a felony

Washington (CNN) The Alabama House, with an eye on challenging the US Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, has passed a bill that, if signed into law, would criminalize abortion. HB 314, which passed the GOP-controlled House on Tuesday in a 74-3 vote, would make abortion a Class A felony, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 99 years, and attempted abortion a Class C felony, which holds a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. All Republicans voted in favor of the bill, except for two who didn't vote. Nearly all Democratic House members chose not to vote, walking out of the House chamber in protest. Republican state Rep. Terri Collins, the bill's sponsor, said when she introduced the bill last month that the measure would provide "a vehicle to revisit the constitutionally-flawed Roe v. Wade decision," WKRG reportedCNN has reached out to Collins' office.
