The expansion is part of a master plan for the airport, sited amidst wetlands on Laconia-owned property within the town of Gilford. Because of the wetlands, each development has to include a drainage plan to minimize the environmental impact. Laconia Airport Manager Marv Everson said the Laconia airport is seeing a large increase in traffic, including larger turbo jets, as people discover how convenient it is to use. The airport also has been trimming trees to improve sight along the flight path, and Everson said the airport authority also is doing an environmental assessment of non-airport-owned property along the flight paths to determine whether other trees should be cut. While the airport has filed plans with the town of Gilford, the Gilford Planning Board has no jurisdiction over the operations, but it can make suggestions.
