Air quality alert issued for southwest Alberta as smoke from U.S. wildfires blows in

Smoke from U.S. forest fires blew in to Alberta on Saturday, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue air quality alerts for the southwest portion of the province. The alert said the smoke would cause poor air quality and reduced visibility for areas including Waterton Lakes National Park, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass, and Cardston County. "If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health," the alert reads. Stephen Vallee, a senior meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said conditions are expected to worsen from moderate to high risk overnight Sunday before improving early next week.
