After strong winds, over 200,000 outages reported in region on Saturday

As the sun went down across the Washington region Saturday night, more than 200,000 homes and businesses faced the darkness without the satisfying warmth and illumination typically provided by electricity. The fury of the winds that tore across the region Friday had abated, but problems remained in its aftermath — including the need to restore power that was cut off when trees fell and wires snapped. Shortly after 8 p.m., Dominion Energy reported 100,000 outages in Northern Virginia, Baltimore Gas and Electric told of 100,000 in its Maryland service area and Pepco reported 25,000. Montgomery County fire officials reported more than 250 wires down Friday. In another effect of the storm, the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Alexandria was called off.
