To mark Carney’s first anniversary, National Post has decided to provide the prime minister and his Liberal colleagues with a one-year report card. Much of Carney’s focus has been on easing the tension and the trade restrictions between Canada and the world’s two most populous countries. As prime minister, however, it was a different story – right from the start. But overall, while some analysts credit the prime minister for his pragmatism in focusing on the country’s most pressing issues, environmentalists say Carney’s first year in office has been a step back. Guilbeault quit Carney’s cabinet in November after the new prime minister signed an agreement with Alberta to pursue a deal on energy and pipelines.
