RALEIGH, N.C.—Authorities heightened security around Confederate monuments across North Carolina on Tuesday, hours after protesters at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill toppled a Jim Crow-era statue. The Silent Sam statue honoring students who fought for the Confederacy has been repeatedly vandalized in the past several years. It was the subject of a similar protest last fall, also at the start of classes.
