Gardiner stepped up to bring the Bahamas gold, smashing his personal best to win in 43.48 seconds, more than half a second clear of Colombian Anthony Zambrano. Both squads earned medals at the 2017 worlds — the women earned gold and the men took silver. "I thought that I was first," he said through a translator, "but unfortunately with that one microsecond I lost the gold."
