After Charlottesville Protests, Fury Flows Toward Local Officials

PhotoCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Residents and local activists roared their approval as speakers condemned local politicians and the police at a gathering here on Sunday for what they said was their failure to protect their city from a rally of white nationalists earlier this month. The meeting, billed as a “community recovery town hall” and held in a performing arts auditorium, was the second in a week to address the events here. Hundreds of white nationalists came to this historic college town to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, resulting in skirmishes between demonstrators and counter-protesters. A 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, was struck and killed when a man drove his car into a crowd. During the previous meeting, residents shouted down the mayor and City Council members and briefly took over the Council chambers.
